Laurie Wakefield – 2026 Robertson Associate Award Recipient

Laurie Wakefield is a lifelong seed grower from near Maidstone, Saskatchewan, where he and his wife, Monica, have operated the family farm for decades. Laurie’s interest in seed production began in his early teens through 4-H crop science clubs, and that passion has shaped his career. Their first pedigree seed crop was certified in 1982, and in 1984 they added a processing plant that remains in use today, helping to produce high-quality seed for growers across the region.
Laurie’s contributions to the seed sector extend well beyond his farm. He served in leadership roles with the Saskatchewan Seed Growers Association as director, vice president, president, and past president. In 2018, he joined the Canadian Seed Growers’ Association (CSGA) Board during a pivotal period, serving on multiple committees, including Regulatory Services, Policy, Awards, and Human Resources. He played a key role in guiding CSGA through strategic transitions, including international benchmarking trips to France and the Netherlands to study seed certification systems abroad. Known for his thoughtful questions, steady leadership, and commitment to members, Laurie has helped shape the long-term vision of Canada’s seed sector.
Outside the farm, Laurie and Monica have raised three children and are proud grandparents of six. Community engagement has always been central to Laurie’s life: he served as a school trustee and board chair, Credit Union board member, and was instrumental in establishing and chairing a regional inter-municipal Fire and Rescue system. Sports and coaching have also been a lifelong passion; Laurie has coached hockey and power skating for many years, always emphasizing skill development, sportsmanship, and fun.
The Robertson Associate Award recognizes Laurie’s decades of service, unwavering fidelity to the Association, and his lasting contributions to the betterment of the seed sector and Canadian agriculture.
