Innovation

Innovation in plant breeding has been delivered through Certified seed and has helped the food industry meet consumer demand for improved nutrition, appearance and processing characteristics. Canola oil is one example of an innovative breakthrough by Canadian plant breeders that has been delivered to farmers through Certified seed.

More recently, there has been a focus on the contribution of dietary fibre to good health. However, many consumers prefer white bread to whole grain bread. Development of improved hard white wheat varieties has allowed bakers to create breads that look similar to white bread but carry much higher dietary fibre by including white bran. The latest hard white wheat varieties have made great strides in meeting the agronomic performance needs of farmers and the nutritional demands of consumers.

Research and plant breeding funded through the sales of Certified seed could continue developing more drought tolerant, disease resistant, higher yielding varieties with specific characteristics required by food processors and end users.
