Jonathan Nyborg – 2025 Robertson Associate Award Recipient
Jonathan Nyborg was the youngest of three children. After graduating high school and being accepted into a prestigious chef school, he made the decision to join the workforce directly, working alongside his father and uncle on the family farm. His passion for agriculture led him to dedicate over three decades to the industry, growing high-quality commercial grains and pedigreed seed.
In 1991, Jonathan married Denise, and together they raised three children—Wesley, Lauren, and Caleb. His two sons eventually joined him on the farm, where they worked together under the family business, Nyborg Farms Ltd. As a Select Grower, Jonathan ensured the farm maintained its high standards in producing top-generation seed. He continued working with his father, Ivan, until his passing in 2016, after which he took full ownership of the farm.
Jonathan’s involvement in the seed sector was impactful. In 2001, he was elected to the Maritime Branch of the Canadian Seed Growers’ Association (CSGA), where he served as President for ten years. In 2012, he joined the National Board of CSGA, moving up to the Executive team in 2014 and later serving as President. Representing growers nationwide became his passion, following in the footsteps of his father, who also served on the National Board and was also a Robertson Associate recipient.
During his time on the Executive Committee, Jonathan played a central role in the Seed Synergy Collaboration Project—an ambitious initiative to explore a single, unified seed organization. As one of CSGA’s key representatives at the negotiating table, he provided steady leadership through complex discussions, advocating for growers and helping shape the future of the seed sector.
Jonathan’s dedication extended beyond agriculture into community service. In 1990, he joined the Drummond Fire Department, where he has served for over three decades, including as Captain, offering leadership and guidance to fellow firefighters. His commitment to public service also led him to elected positions, including serving on the District 14 Education Council from 2004 to 2012.
In 2023, Jonathan made the difficult decision to step away from farming and transitioned into the Heavy Civil Construction industry, working in water, sewer, and storm drain installation. Still, as he puts it, he continues “playing in the dirt.”
In his free time, Jonathan enjoys hunting, fishing, and, most importantly, spending time with his family. With four grandchildren keeping life exciting, there is never a dull moment. His time with CSGA remains one of his most cherished experiences, reflecting his lifelong dedication to the seed sector and its people.
