Dr. Karl Peter Pauls – 2025 Honorary Life Award

Dr. Karl Peter Pauls, University Professor Emeritus in the Department of Plant Agriculture at the University of Guelph, has dedicated 41 years to research, teaching, and leadership in plant sciences. He earned his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Waterloo, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in Biophysics at the University of British Columbia. Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Pauls held leadership roles, including Director of the Guelph/Waterloo Plant Biotechnology Centre, Acting Associate Dean of the Ontario Agricultural College, and Chair of the Department of Plant Agriculture.

Dr. Pauls’ research focuses on cellular and molecular studies of plant development, agronomic traits, and bean breeding, with notable contributions to genomics and bioproducts. He has mentored over 70 graduate students and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom have advanced to prominent roles in academia, government, and private industry. His work has led to the development of 50 CFIA-registered bean varieties, including the Dynasty Dark Red Kidney Bean, which has significantly benefited Ontario bean growers.

A recognized leader in plant breeding and biotechnology, Dr. Pauls has received numerous awards, including the University of Guelph Distinguished Professor Award and the Bean Improvement Cooperative Meritorious Service Award. He has published 193 peer-reviewed articles and contributed to 21 book chapters. His work continues to shape the future of plant breeding and genomics, with ongoing collaborations and innovations in crop research.
