Rick Love – 2026 Honorary Life Award Recipient
Rick Love has dedicated more than four decades to advancing seed production, variety development, and regulatory excellence across Western Canada. Raised in Melfort, Saskatchewan, on a small cow-calf operation, Rick’s early interest in agriculture led him to study at the University of Saskatchewan, where mentorship from crop science professors inspired a lifelong career in the seed sector.
Rick began his professional journey with Newfield Seeds, supporting farmers in diversifying operations and learning seed production practices. He then held key roles at United Grain Growers and Brett Young Seeds, gaining expertise in seed purchasing, quality management, production, and export. In 2011, Rick joined CANTERRA SEEDS as Pedigreed Seed Business Manager, collaborating with growers to introduce over 150 improved varieties across cereals, oilseeds, pulses, forages, and specialty crops. His work provided tangible benefits to growers while advancing seed quality and innovation throughout Western Canada.
A respected industry leader, Rick has contributed extensively to variety registration and advisory committees, including the Prairie Recommending Committee for Wheat, Rye, and Triticale (PRCWRT), Saskatchewan Advisory Committee for Grain Crops (SACGC), Alberta Regional Variety Advisory Committee (ARVAC), and CSGA’s Regulatory Services Committee. Known for his thoughtful guidance, Rick’s mentorship and proactive communication strengthened collaboration between growers, seed companies, and regulatory bodies.
Rick’s distinguished career has been marked by a reputation for integrity, expertise, and dedication to improving Canada’s seed sector. Upon retirement, he and his wife Della plan to return to their roots in Melfort, Saskatchewan. The Honorary Life Award recognizes Rick Love’s lifelong contributions, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the betterment of Canadian agriculture.
