CSGA Update on Seed Regulatory Modernization

The Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan Seed Growers’ Associations are hosting a series of SeedTalk Prairies Webinars. On January 26, their first webinar, “Seed Regulatory Modernization Update,” provided a detailed update on the SRM process and how the project is progressing.

CSGA’s Executive Director, Doug Miller, provided insight on CSGA’s recommendation for modernized seed regulations and Canadian seed sector. CSGA is proud of its track record as a reliable regulatory partner and wants to do more on behalf of Canadian agriculture. Wendy Jahn, CFIA’s National Manager, Seed Section, also provided an SRM winter update on the results of the consultation process.

You can watch the webinar on our YouTube channel and download a PDF copy of CSGA’s presentation here.

Upcoming SeedTalk Prairies Webinars include:

Revised Circular 6 Available Online

As Canada’s national seed crop certification authority, CSGA continues to improve the Canadian Regulations and Procedures for Pedigreed Seed Crop Production (Circular 6) to ensure that standards are updated, internationally harmonized, and incorporate new technology.

Regulation and standard changes have been made to Circular 6 effective for the 2022 growing season. Following a consultation with members and sector stakeholders, changes were made to Buckwheat standards.

Additional revisions have been made to the General Requirements for All Pedigreed Seed Crops. Several requirements have been removed related to issuing a crop certificate after April 30 and the number of varieties and crop kinds that a seed grower can produce. For a complete list of changes, please read the Notice of Changes.

To ensure crops are produced according to regulations, growers and assignees must consult the appropriate sections of Circular 6. Please download the latest version available on CSGA’s website.

Should you have questions on these revisions, please contact Gail Harris, Manager, Standards, or call (613) 236-0497 ext. 227.
